"Olúwa Kú Isé" for percussion ensemble is a vibrant arrangement based on a traditional Yorùbá folk song beloved by the Ìjèshà people of Osun State. This piece preserves the original melody, which is rooted in a pentatonic scale and features two tonic centers, creating a blend of minor tonalities. The arrangement weaves a complex web of interlocking melodies and rhythms among the percussion instruments, with the agogo playing a crucial timekeeping role through a standard West African bell pattern. While the djembe, conga, and sekere players are encouraged to improvise, the agogo and clave players adhere to their ostinato patterns, and marimba players have designated improvisatory moments. The piece follows a call-and-response structure and transitions between 12/8 and 4/4 time signatures, requiring precise attention to rhythmic details. "Olúwa Kú Isé" captures themes of gratitude, happiness, and praise, celebrating the folk song's spirit through a dynamic and engaging performance.
