Our Present

In 2023, Àkójọpọ̀ rebranded, expanding its mission beyond Nigeria to promote Pan-African Art Music. This shift allowed the organization to support a broader network of artists, educators, and communities across the African diaspora, fostering collaboration, innovation, and cultural preservation on a global scale. Initially, we were solely registered in Michigan, but we decided to also incorporate in Illinois while retaining our 501(c)(3) status. Àkójọpọ̀ is now based in Chicago, Illinois, where Daniel Kumapayi, the Founder and Executive director, resides.

Our Past

Àkójọpọ̀ originally began in 2020 with funding support from optiMize, an organization at the University of Michigan that offers programs, courses, mentorship, and funding for students of all ages and majors to work on self-directed projects. Initially, the organization was called Nigerian Art Music and focused on providing educational workshops, instruments, and musical resources to sustain the growth of classical music in Lagos, Nigeria. While Daniel Kumapayi was a student at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, he laid the foundation for the organization’s mission and vision.
